The Central California Writing Project has partnered with Free Books For Kids, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting a love of reading and improving literacy by providing free, high-quality books to children, teachers, parents and community groups. Together, CCWP and Free Books For Kids share a mission to empower young readers, support educators, and create equitable access to educational resources. This partnership enhances CCWP’s efforts to develop learning communities that inspire both youth and educators through the power of language, literacy, and writing, ultimately contributing to a more socially just and literate society.

Free Books For Kids’ mission is to make books accessible to those who would otherwise have limited access, especially children in households where books are scarce. Many of the books they distribute would likely be pulped without their intervention, which not only reduces waste but also helps books find meaningful new homes. Our work is powered by the generosity of our community, through grants, donations, and volunteer time. Free Books For Kids has no paid employees, relying entirely on our dedicated team of volunteers. Free Books For Kids is proud to have given away over 250,000 books since 2014.

Free Books For Kids partners with a wide range of organizations, including Boys & Girls Clubs, Second Harvest Food Bank, Dientes (Dental Health Care), local school districts, the University of California Master of Education and Credential Program, the Central California Writing Project, and the Children’s Museum of Discovery to reach those in need. Free Books For Kids has sent books to a homeless education program in San Francisco, to areas ravaged by disasters, (e.g. Lahaina, Hawaii), to schools in South American and to an orphanage in Kenya. These partnerships enable Free Books For Kids to distribute books to a diverse and growing population of children, caregivers, and educators who benefit from our services.

Funding for Free Books For Kids is supported by generous grants, including those from Bay Federal Credit Union and the St. John’s Helpful Shop, as well as the ongoing support of local donors. These resources allow Free Books For Kids to continue their mission of promoting literacy, learning, and community engagement for California’s most vulnerable populations.
