Louann Baker, Central California Writing Project Director and UCSC Instructor/Supervisor of Teacher Education, loves designing instructional materials and facilitating literacy workshops. With a Master’s in Reading and Language Arts and a Reading Specialist credential, she has participated in statewide writing research projects, including a twelve-year collaboration with CWP in the ISAW (Improving Student Analytical Writing) study. During her 30 years of teaching, she has made a commitment to keeping students at the center, to life-long learning from colleagues, and to understanding the implications of Equity in the context of curriculum, instruction and assessment.

What is “elaboration?”  What lessons, strategies, mentor texts and tools will help my students improve their conceptual understanding of and their use of “elaboration” in their writing?
