Judith Scott, CCWP’s PI, receives recognition
Our Central California Writing Project Principal Investigator, Professor Emerita Judith Scott – UCSC Education Department, received two acknowledgements of her outstanding contributions to the literacy community this year. In April, she was awarded the 2022 Vocabulary Special Interest Group Notable Vocabulary Researcher Award at the Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association in San Diego. The award recognizes scholars whose research in vocabulary, literacy and learning has had a significant impact on the field. At the meeting, presenters engaged the audience in a game of “Judy Scott Wordle” and listened to poems and limericks about her written by P. David Pearson, former Dean of Education at UC Berkeley and a member of her dissertation committee many years ago.
On December 1st in Phoenix, Az at the Literary Research Association (LRA) Conference, Judy was inducted into the Reading Hall of Fame for her lifetime achievements in the field of literacy. Only 5 members are elected internationally each year, and Judy has joined a group of approximately 140 living luminaries in literacy research whose members include David Bloome, Courtney Cazden, Yetta Goodman, Kris Gutiérrez, Shirley Brice Heath, Carol Lee, Luis Moll, and P. David Pearson. Judy has been invited to give a talk at the 2023 meeting.
As the current President of the Hall of Fame put it in his letter announcing Judy’s election, “Being elected to the Reading Hall of Fame is on of the greatest honors that might be bestowed upon an individual serving the literacy profession.”
